Supported Independent Living (SIL)
SSS Support provides Supported Independent Living (SIL) — in-home support that helps people with disability live as independently as possible in their own home or shared accommodation. SIL is available through NDIS funding (Registration Group 0138, Supported Independent Living) and, for lower-intensity in-home arrangements, on a private basis for individuals and families who prefer to self-fund.
SIL is one of the most significant support types the NDIS funds. It covers the support workers and the care they provide — not the housing itself. Whether a participant needs around-the-clock assistance or a few hours of daily help with tasks they find challenging, SSS Support delivers SIL with consistent staffing, genuine person-centred care and full respect for each person’s right to choose how they live.
What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?
Supported Independent Living is one of the NDIS’s most significant support types.
It funds the assistance participants need to complete daily tasks in their home — not the housing itself, but the support that makes living there possible.
SIL is suitable for participants who need regular, ongoing help with:
— Personal care and hygiene routines
— Meal preparation and eating assistance
— Household tasks and domestic duties
— Managing medications
— Community access and social participation
— Building independent living skills over time

SIL funding is included in a participant’s NDIS plan and is assessed based on their individual support needs and goals.
It can be delivered in a shared house with other participants, or in a participant’s own private home.

What's the Difference Between SIL and SDA?
SIL and SDA are often confused — they are related but separate things.
SIL (Supported Independent Living) is the funding for support workers — the people who help you with daily tasks, personal care, household activities and skill development in your home. SSS Support provides SIL.
SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) is the housing itself — specially designed or modified homes built for people with very high support needs. SSS Support does not provide SDA housing, but we can work alongside SDA providers to deliver the support workers within an SDA home.
Some participants have both SIL and SDA in their NDIS plan. Many SIL participants live in standard rental properties, with a housemate or on their own — SDA housing is not required to access SIL support.
How to Access Supported Independent Living Through SSS Support
Step 1: Contact Us
Call or email SSS Support to discuss your situation, your NDIS plan and what SIL might look like for you or your family member.
Step 2: Needs Assessment
We conduct a thorough assessment of support needs in collaboration with the participant, family and support coordinator to understand what funding and services are required.
Step 3: SIL Proposal
We prepare a SIL Roster of Care and submit a detailed proposal to the NDIS for funding approval. Our team guides you through this process.
Step 4: Support Begins
Once approved, we arrange your home environment, match you with the right support workers and begin delivering your personalised SIL support.
SSS Support guides you through every step of this process. If you’re at the beginning of exploring SIL, contact us early — the sooner we’re involved, the smoother the process tends to be.
Funding Options — NDIS and Private
NDIS-funded participants
Supported Independent Living is funded under Core Supports — Assistance with Daily Life in your NDIS plan (Registration Group 0138, Supported Independent Living). This is a specific, standalone registration group dedicated to SIL — separate from other daily living and shared support categories. SIL funding is one of the larger NDIS support budgets and requires a Roster of Care to be submitted to the NDIS for approval — this details exactly what support is needed, how many hours and what times. SSS Support assists with this process from the start. If your plan mentions SIL, shared accommodation or in-home support needs, speak to your support coordinator or contact us directly to begin planning.
Privately funded individuals and families
If you’re exploring independent or shared living arrangements privately — before NDIS funding is confirmed or as a self-funded arrangement — SSS Support can discuss in-home support options on a private-pay basis. This is less common for full SIL due to the level of support involved, but we can discuss what’s practical for your situation and budget.
Not sure what you have?
SIL funding can be complex to navigate. Contact SSS Support and we’ll help you understand whether your NDIS plan includes SIL funding, what the Roster of Care process involves and what the next steps look like for your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Supported Independent Living (SIL) under the NDIS?
SIL is NDIS-funded support that helps participants with daily tasks so they can live as independently as possible — in their own home, a shared house or supported accommodation. It covers personal care, meal prep, household tasks, medication and more. It is funded under Registration Group 0138 (Supported Independent Living).
How do I get SIL funding in my NDIS plan?
SIL funding is assessed and approved by the NDIS based on your support needs, functional capacity and living situation. You typically need an Occupational Therapist (OT) assessment and a detailed support needs assessment. A registered SIL provider like SSS Support can help prepare the required Roster of Care and support the NDIS approval process.
Can I choose who I live with in a SIL arrangement?
Yes. The NDIS is built on choice and control. You have the right to have input into who you share accommodation with in a SIL arrangement. SSS Support works with participants and their families to ensure living arrangements are compatible and comfortable.
What is the difference between SIL and SDA?
SIL (Supported Independent Living) funds the support workers who help you in your home. SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) funds the physical home or dwelling itself for participants with very high support needs. Some participants receive both. SSS Support delivers SIL services across western Melbourne.
Does SSS Support offer 24/7 SIL support?
Yes. SSS Support can provide round-the-clock SIL support depending on the funding in your NDIS plan and your assessed support needs. Contact us to discuss your situation and what overnight or 24-hour support might look like for you.
Where does SSS Support provide SIL support?
SSS Support provides SIL across the western Melbourne area and surrounding suburbs. Contact us to confirm availability in your specific area and to discuss what a SIL arrangement would look like for your participant.
Can I access in-home support without NDIS SIL funding?
Yes. For lower-intensity in-home support arrangements, SSS Support can discuss private-pay options for individuals and families who are not yet on the NDIS or who prefer to self-fund. Full SIL packages are primarily NDIS-funded due to their complexity and cost — contact us to discuss what’s suitable for your situation.
What is a Roster of Care and do I need one?
A Roster of Care is a detailed document that outlines exactly what SIL support a participant needs — the tasks, hours and times — and is submitted to the NDIS as part of the SIL approval process. If you’re applying for NDIS SIL funding, a Roster of Care is required. SSS Support helps develop and submit this document as part of the SIL onboarding process.
What is the difference between SIL and SDA?
SIL is the funding for support workers who help you with daily tasks in your home. SDA is the housing itself — specially designed accommodation for people with very high support needs. They are separate things. Many SIL participants live in standard rental properties. SSS Support provides SIL support workers — not SDA housing.
