Life Skills Development for People with Disability

At SSS Support, we are dedicated to helping people with disability build greater independence, confidence and autonomy in their everyday lives. Our Life Skills Development service is available through NDIS funding (Registration Group 0117, Capacity Building) and on a private basis for individuals and families who prefer to self-fund their coaching and skill building.

Our Life Skills Development service is funded under NDIS Registration Group 0117 (Development of Life Skills) and designed to support participants in acquiring the essential daily living and interpersonal skills that contribute to a more empowered and fulfilling life.

For young participants moving toward adulthood, this support also connects with Registration Group 0106 — Assist-Life Stage, Transition — helping navigate key life transitions with confidence and preparation.

What Is NDIS Life Skills Development?

The Development of Daily Living and Life Skills (NDIS Registration Group 0117) is a Capacity Building support category that focuses on training and coaching to help participants live more independently, make informed decisions and actively engage in community life.

Unlike supports that do things for participants, life skills development is about teaching, practising and building capability — so that over time, participants need less support and have more control over their own lives.

This support can be delivered individually, in small groups or through community-based learning — whatever best suits the participant’s learning style, goals and NDIS plan.

Assist-Life Stage, Transition Support
(NDIS Registration Group 0106)

SSS Support is also registered under NDIS Registration Group 0106 — Assist-Life Stage, Transition. This funding specifically supports participants navigating major life transitions, such as:

Moving from school to further education, employment or day programs

Transitioning from the family home to supported or independent living

Adjusting to life changes following a new diagnosis or change in support needs

Moving between services, accommodation settings or life stages

Transition periods can be challenging without the right support in place. Our team works alongside participants, families and support coordinators to make these transitions as smooth, planned and empowering as possible.

Our Approach —
Goal-Focused, Practical & Participant-Led

Every person’s learning journey is different. At SSS Support, we don’t use one-size-fits-all programs — we design life skills support around each participant’s NDIS goals, current capabilities, learning style and personal aspirations.

STEP 1 - Understand Your Goals

We start by listening — understanding what independence means to you and which skills matter most in your daily life.

STEP 2 - Design Your Plan

We create a practical, goal-aligned support plan that works within your NDIS funding and schedule.

STEP 3 - Practice in Real Life

Skills are practised in real environments — your home, your community, local shops, transport and more.

STEP 4 - Review & Build

We regularly review progress, celebrate milestones and adapt the plan as your skills and confidence grow.

Funding Options — NDIS and Private

NDIS-funded participants

Life skills development is funded under Development of Daily Living and Life Skills in your NDIS plan (Registration Group 0117). Unlike Core Supports, Capacity Building funding is specifically earmarked for building skills and independence over time — which is exactly what life skills coaching is designed to do. If your NDIS plan includes independence or daily living goals, 0117 funding is likely allocated. Check your Capacity Building budget with your support coordinator or plan manager — or contact SSS Support and we’ll help you read your plan.

Privately funded individuals and families

Life skills coaching is available on a private-pay basis for individuals who are not yet on the NDIS, are waiting for their first plan or prefer to arrange skill building support independently. This is particularly common for young people transitioning to adulthood whose families want to begin developing practical skills before NDIS funding is confirmed. Contact us to discuss what a private arrangement looks like.

Not sure what you have?

Look for Development of Daily Living and Life Skills in your NDIS plan. If you have independence or daily living goals listed, there is likely 0117 funding attached. Contact SSS Support and we will help you confirm what is available and how to get started.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is NDIS life skills development (Registration Group 0117)?

NDIS Registration Group 0117 — Development of Life Skills — is a Capacity Building support that funds coaching and training to help participants live more independently. It covers skills like cooking, budgeting, communication, transport, household management and goal setting — practised in real-life settings with a support worker.

Is life skills development funded under Core Supports or Capacity Building?

Life skills development is funded under Capacity Building — specifically the “Daily Activities” or “Social & Community Participation” Capacity Building budgets in your NDIS plan. Unlike Core Supports, Capacity Building funding cannot generally be moved between categories, so it’s important to use it for its intended purpose. Your support coordinator or plan manager can confirm what’s in your plan.

Can life skills development help my child transition from school to adulthood?

Yes — this is one of the most important uses of life skills funding. SSS Support also works under NDIS Registration Group 0106 (Assist-Life Stage, Transition), which specifically supports young people moving from school into further education, employment, day programs or independent living. Early planning makes a significant difference — contact us to discuss school leaver NDIS support and what options are available for your young person.

What kinds of life skills can an NDIS support worker help me learn?

An NDIS support worker can help you develop a wide range of practical skills — cooking and meal preparation, household cleaning and laundry, budgeting and managing money, using public transport, social and communication skills, digital literacy, time management and personal hygiene routines. The focus is always on your personal goals and what matters most to your independence.

How is life skills development different from personal care support?

Personal care support (Registration Group 0107) is about doing things with or for you — helping you shower, dress or eat. Life skills development (Registration Group 0117) is about teaching you to do things yourself over time — building capability and independence so you need less hands-on support in the future. Both are valuable and often work well alongside each other.

Which suburbs do you provide life skills development support in?

SSS Support provides life skills development across western Melbourne and surrounding suburbs. Contact us to confirm availability in your area and discuss your goals.

Can I access life skills support without an NDIS plan?

Yes. SSS Support provides life skills coaching on a private-pay basis for individuals who are not yet on the NDIS, are waiting for plan approval or prefer to self-fund. This is particularly common for families of young people approaching adulthood who want to start building practical skills before NDIS funding is in place. Contact us to discuss private arrangements.
