Community Participation Support for People with Disability

At SSS Support, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to be seen, heard and genuinely included in the community around them.

Our Community Participation support is available through NDIS funding (Registration Group 0125 — Participate Community, Core Supports) and on a private basis for individuals and families who prefer to self-fund their community access. We also hold registration under Group 0116 — Innovative Community Participation — for participants who need a more creative or tailored approach to community engagement.

Both supports are designed to help people with disability actively engage in the social, recreational and community activities that enrich their lives — building confidence, skills and real connections along the way.

What Is NDIS Community Participation Support?

NDIS Community Participation support helps participants become meaningfully involved in community life — not just as observers, but as active, valued members. It’s funded under Core Supports and/or Capacity Building depending on your plan, and covers a wide range of social, recreational and civic activities. This support could include:

  • Joining clubs, hobby groups or interest classes
  • Attending social outings, events, festivals or markets
  • Going to the gym, swimming or participating in team sports
  • Volunteering or engaging in educational and vocational programs
  • Visiting libraries, shopping centres, cafes or places of interest
  • Attending religious, cultural or community gatherings
  • Building new friendships and expanding social networks
  • Exploring new interests and trying new experiences

Whether it’s a weekly outing, a regular club membership or a one-off event, every activity is tailored to your personal goals and what matters most to you.

Boost Self-Confidence & Self-Worth
Every new experience — however small — builds the belief that you belong and that the community is yours to enjoy. We celebrate every milestone alongside you.

Reduce Isolation & Build Genuine Friendships
Loneliness and social isolation are real challenges for many participants. We actively support you to meet new people, join groups and develop friendships that last beyond our support sessions.

Learn New Skills in Real-Life Settings
Community participation is one of the most powerful ways to develop life skills — communication, problem-solving, money handling, public transport and more, all learned naturally in everyday situations.

Build Greater Independence in Social Settings
Our goal is always to increase your independence over time — so that eventually, you can participate in community life as confidently and freely as possible, with less support needed.

Innovative Community Participation

SSS Support is also registered under Registration Group 0116 — Innovative Community Participation. This funding supports participants to trial new, creative approaches to community engagement — particularly for those who find traditional community settings challenging. Innovative community participation can include:

— Trying new social environments with a structured, supported approach

— Peer mentoring and connection programs

— Creative, arts-based or technology-enabled community engagement

— Building community connections in culturally specific or interest-specific groups

If your NDIS plan includes Innovative Community Participation funding and you’re looking for a more creative approach to community engagement, talk to our team about what’s possible — or visit our Innovative Community Participation page for full details.

Funding Options — NDIS and Private

NDIS-funded participants

Community Participation support is funded under Core Supports — Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation in your NDIS plan (Registration Group 0125). If your plan includes social participation goals or a community access budget, this funding is likely already available. Speak to your support coordinator or plan manager to confirm — or contact SSS Support and we’ll help you understand what you have.

Privately funded individuals and families

If you’re not yet on the NDIS or prefer to self-fund, SSS Support provides community participation support on a private-pay basis. This suits individuals waiting for a first plan, who have been declined, or who simply prefer private arrangements. The support is identical — only the funding source differs.

Not sure what you have?

Contact us — we’re happy to help you understand your NDIS plan and confirm what community participation support is funded, or to discuss private options if NDIS funding isn’t in place yet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is NDIS community participation support?

NDIS community participation support (Registration Group 0125) helps participants with disability actively engage in social, recreational and community activities — such as joining clubs, attending events, going to the gym, volunteering or building friendships. It is funded under Core Supports or Capacity Building depending on your individual NDIS plan.

What is the difference between community participation (0125) and innovative community participation (0116)?

Registration Group 0125 covers standard community participation activities — social outings, clubs, events and recreation. Registration Group 0116 (Innovative Community Participation) supports participants to trial new, creative or non-traditional approaches to community engagement, particularly for those who find conventional settings challenging. SSS Support is registered under both groups.

Can NDIS pay for a support worker to take me to activities and events?

Yes. If your NDIS plan includes community participation funding, SSS Support can arrange a support worker to accompany you to activities, events, outings and social gatherings — helping you participate fully and safely. Note: the NDIS funds the support worker’s time, not the activity cost itself.

What kinds of activities can I do with community participation support?

The range is broad and tailored to your interests — gym and sport, swimming, libraries, arts and crafts, volunteering, community gardens, cultural events, social groups, cafes, markets, disability-inclusive clubs and much more. If there’s something you want to try, we’ll work with you to find it and make it happen.

Is community participation funded under Core Supports or Capacity Building?

It can be both, depending on the goal. Social and community access activities are generally funded under Core Supports (Daily Activities budget). When the focus is specifically on building skills and independence in social settings, it may be funded under Capacity Building — Social & Community Participation. Your support coordinator or plan manager can confirm which budget applies in your plan.

Where does SSS Support provide community participation support?

SSS Support provides community participation support across western Melbourne and surrounding suburbs. Contact us to confirm availability in your area and to discuss what activities and outings would suit your participant.

Can I access community participation support without an NDIS plan?

Yes. SSS Support provides community participation support on a private-pay basis for individuals who are not yet on the NDIS, are waiting for plan approval, or prefer to self-fund their community access. Contact us to discuss private rates and availability.
